Only one copy of the film burned in 1967 at vault #7 at MGM. Foreign editions had to exist. Britian had THE HYPNOTIST. France had LONDRES ARRES MINUIT. Surely televison may have shown this film or used scenes on other programs. I'm hoping to strike paydirt with the kinescope quest. If anyone has any leads, let me know.

Clips existing in old documentries is possible.

Entire film, no. If it was shown, it would have been a local, not network broadcast. Even if it had been presented with hosts talking about it (very unlikely to begin with), the station wouldn't have recorded it.

This applies even with 60s movie-showing shows, and to some extent with 70s shows.

Yeah, I kinda found this one out while researching. Does anyone out here have episodes of Silents, Please! or a tv special titled Monsters We Know and Love?

Also, I've been researching the foreign releases... this is taking awhile because of my inability to understand, and translating using babel fish.... Tod Browning becomes Death Browning when I translate German to English...

Does anyone know how to reach a man called Sid Terror?

Thanks *beep! I've got it, but I love it.

I have friend of a friend of a friend who sells underground.
They sell lost or wanted movies to private collectors. I read today about a private collector scoring a copy of LAM for a couple of hundred bucks

Even if someone has a copy of this film wouldn't it still be under copyright to MGM?

Yes. The film would be. I think till 2027 (but I'm not sure about that). I just want a few minutes to prove that the film exists somewhere in this great big old world.
1 copy burned up in 67. That's one out of several copies from around the world. Germany, Portugal, Spain, Greece, and a few more all had copies of this film. Pre 67 tv might have used a clip on a television program orin a tv special about silent films.
I'm doing this because I want to see the film. Period.

On You Tube there is a short movie called BOO!(1932)from Universal Studios that has clips from Frankenstein, Nosferatu and The Cat Creeps- The Cat Creeps is a lost movie and tis short film has (Aside from the trailer) The only footage known of the movie- I'm sure MGM also made a lot of short movies to show in their theaters (The big studios owned their own theaters then) So maybe a search of the old shorts of MGM would turn up a clip or two from LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT.

There is a DVD you might want to look up if they still sell it- Something Weird Video's edition of MONSTERS CRASH PAJAMA PARTY. There is an extra of an old home movie that seems to be from the late 20's (The clothes seem to be from that era) In this home movie a tall thin man is dress as Lon Chaney Sr's vampire from LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT and is walking weirdly- Forrest J. Acterman said that the vampire in LAM walked like Groucho Marx and that is how the man in the home movie seems to walk. The film had to been made by people who saw the film in it's theater release so you might want to check it out to see how the vampire moved and acted from someone copying the movements of Chaney.

Here's the youtube clip it's definately something from SWV since there's a watermark that's SWV:

I seriously doubt that this is part of London After Midnight let alone Lon Chaney,Sr. in this clip.

I did not make myself clear in my post- I did not think that was Chaney in this short film- I do believe that it is some one who saw the movie and is copying Chaney's acting from the movie and from that we can have an idea of how the vampire was played by Chaney.

This version was made from stills from the film. Forrest J.Ackerman, editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland, had a standing offer of 35,000.00 for a print. There could very well be a 16mm print or foreign print somewhere, other lost films have been found in stranger places.

CURSE OF THE UBANGI a lost exploitation movie by Dwain Esper has shown up dubbed in Spainish on South American television- So it's not so hard to imagine that somewhere prints of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT is being used by showmen in other countries that don't know what they got. I never thought that they would ever find a print of the 1910 FRANKENSTEIN but here it is in the Archives.

I always like to think that somewhere out there is a print of every lost film waiting to be found.
And with any luck someone will put a print of that rare film here in the Archives for everyone to download and enjoy.
